Why Fantasy Games Are So Good at Making Us Forget the Real World

Log in. Zone out. Feel infinitely better. If that’s your Tuesday night routine, you’re doing what a growing pile of research says works.

Rent’s up, the group chat is chaos, and doomscrolling stopped being fun. So gamers did what gamers do: found a workaround.

StartPlaying’s recent survey found that 44% say gaming rivals therapy or mindfulness for their mental health. One in ten depend on it as a cheaper stand-in for care they can’t afford. The results add another dimension to research on RPGs and escapism.

Even wilder? About 36% say rising costs are pushing them to play instead of dining out, traveling, going to concerts, or dating. Also, Skyrim doesn’t have a cover charge.

Not Just Vibes

“Escapism” used to sound like an insult. Now it’s a mechanism researchers can measure.

A study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research on open-world games and mental well-being surveyed hundreds of players. It found that the freedom to roam, with no waypoints and no hand-holding, triggers what researchers call “cognitive escapism.”

This, in turn, cranks up relaxation and overall well-being. Basically: wandering the Wild without objective markers is a legit coping mechanism, not avoidance with better graphics.

Why Open Worlds Are the Best Kind of Nowhere

GamesRadar’s roundup of the best open-world titles reads like a bucket list for people who want to “completely forget real life exists.”

That’s their own framing, and it tracks.

Whether you’re getting lost in the Continent in The Witcher 3 or dodging dragons in Skyrim, the appeal isn’t the quest log. It’s not knowing what’s over the next hill.

Linear games tell you where to look. Open worlds dare you to wonder.

NPCs Are Getting a Personality Upgrade

Fantasy worlds are harder to leave. Fable’s reboot is reportedly reviving persistent NPC memory. Think townsfolk who remember what you did, form opinions, and hold grudges.

That’s the difference between a world that reacts to you and one that resets. The more Albion (or any fantasy setting) remembers you, the harder it is to log off. From a pure escapism standpoint, it’s the whole point.

When the Escape Has Stakes

Fantasy RPGs aren’t the only place gamers go to vanish for an hour.

The same “reset my brain” energy is fueling online casino sites. Quick-hit slots like Gates of Olympus and Sweet Bonanza have their own loading screen far from reality.

Many online casinos in Canada, for example, offer real bonuses and fast payout speeds. The difference is stakes, literally. Where a bad decision in Baldur’s Gate costs you a companion’s approval rating, a bad run at the tables costs money.

If that’s part of your rotation, keep it in the “fun reset” lane. Comparison and review site Casino.com advises setting limits and ensuring the platforms are legitimate and operating within a legal framework.

Even Kojima Can’t Stop Thinking About Forgetting

Some fantasy game designers are obsessed with the forgetting part too.

Hideo Kojima floated the idea of a game where your character loses skills and memory the longer you stay away. As most 30-somethings juggling a backlog know, it’s basically already real life.

“Players would have to take a week off work or school to play it.” – Hideo Kojima, creator of Metal Gear.

The irony writes itself: we play to forget the real world, and the real world keeps making us forget the game.

Squad Up, Stress Down

None of this escapism is solo, either.

The Oxford Internet Institute’s research suggests that MMO engagement is linked to stronger social identity, higher self-esteem, and lower loneliness. Friendships forged over voice chat are as “real” as those made face-to-face.

FAQs

Is escaping into fantasy games healthy, or am I avoiding my life?

Depends on how you use it. Research on open-world games found that the freedom players get from exploring directly boosts relaxation and well-being. The line between a healthy reset and avoidance is whether you log in or struggle to log off.

Why do open-world RPGs feel more immersive than linear games?

No hand-holding. GamesRadar’s list of the best open-world games is a monument to that not-knowing-what’s-over-the-hill feeling. The appeal is agency, not objectives.

Do online gaming friendships count as “real” social connections?

Researchers say yes. Psychologists found MMO engagement correlates with stronger social identity and lower loneliness. In other words, friendships built over voice chat aren’t a lesser version of the real thing.

What makes a fantasy world “immersive” instead of just big?

Scale isn’t a big deal anymore. Fable’s rumored NPC memory system points to where the genre’s headed: worlds that react to you personally, not a bigger map.

Building Better Escapes

None of this works without the worlds themselves.

World-building legends like Ed Greenwood have spent decades explaining what makes a setting worth disappearing into.

Should you feel guilty about it?

No. Escapism with intent is a legitimate coping tool, backed by data. Log in, get lost, come back lighter. That’s not avoidance. That’s maintenance.
